A jeep safari is three hours in the park, and a stay near Jim Corbett is two or three days. The question every guest asks before they come is what the other twenty-one hours hold. Here is the answer from a farm six kilometres from the park, in the order of a day: what there is to do in the morning, the afternoon and after dark, on the farm and within an hour of it, and what changes with the season.

### Is there anything to do in Jim Corbett besides the safari?

More than the safari, if you stay in the right place. The park takes one slot of your day, morning or afternoon, and [how that slot is booked](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/blog/jim-corbett-safari-booking) is its own note. The rest depends entirely on where you sleep. A room on a road with nothing but other rooms around it has a long afternoon in it. A farm of 170 acres has a river nearby, an orchard in the middle, a runway, an observatory and a pool, and the afternoon is the part guests remember.

So this is a list of what The Homestead has, because it is the farm we know. Most of it is on the farm itself; some of it is a short drive. [Everything on the farm](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/experiences) is listed with what it costs, where it costs anything.

### What is there to do in the morning?

**The orchard walk**. The farm is mango and lychee, planted in rows that run towards the forest, and the walk through them at first light is the quietest hour of the day. In late May and June the fruit is on the trees and comes off them into your hand. Dogs come on the walk.

**The river**. The rivers of these foothills hold golden mahseer, the fish that brought anglers here a century ago. A [guided session on the river](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/experiences/river-and-mahseer) is catch and release, and it sits outside the monsoon.

**Flying**. The farm has its own grass runway, Sakhanpur Airfield, and from it you can go up in an ultralight with a pilot or under a paramotor. [Flights](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/airfield) run in the early morning and the late afternoon, from October to June, and never in the monsoon. From the air the orchard is a grid and the forest is everything beyond it.

**The safari itself** is a morning thing in most guests' plans: tea before dawn, the jeep at the door, breakfast when you are back.

### And in the afternoon?

**The pool**. A swimming pool in the garden, with a stone waterfall, which earns its keep from April to June and is pleasant in October and March.

**Mini golf and pickleball**. A [nine-hole mini golf course](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/experiences/mini-golf-and-pickleball) winds through the flower beds, and there is a pickleball court beside the lawns. Both are booked by the hour.

**The ride and the tea**. [Thirty minutes on an ATV](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/experiences/atv-rides) round the track that loops the farm, two vehicles at a time, and then high tea under the jamun tree. The ride earns the tea.

**Warm water**. A [jacuzzi that takes up to six for half an hour, a massage room, and a hammam steam bath](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/experiences/wellness) that opens in peak winter, when the cold is the point of it.

**For children**. A play area with swings and a tree house, table tennis, the mini golf, the animals, and the pool. Children are welcome at the table at dinner, and the ATV track and the telescopes are theirs as much as anyone's.

### What happens after dark?

**The stars**. TARA is the farm's own observatory, with several telescopes and a guide who knows where to point them. A [session at TARA](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/experiences/stargazing) is about an hour, on clear nights from October to June. The foothills are darker than you expect, and the Milky Way is plain in the dark half of the month. If the sky clouds over, the session does not go ahead and is not charged.

**The bonfire**. One evening in the garden round the fire, which in December and January is where everyone ends up.

**A film under the stars**. A screen and cushions on the lawn, on a night when the sky is clear.

**Dinner**. At the table, at Glenfern or under the Baradari: North Indian home cooking at set hours, and a candlelight dinner at a table of your own if you ask for one. [What the kitchen does](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/dining) is its own page, and which meals your stay includes depends on the room and plan you book.

### What is worth seeing within an hour of the farm?

The places guests ask about are all within an hour, and a safari leaves the rest of the day free for one of them, or for none.

- **The Garjiya Devi temple**, which stands on a rock in the Kosi river a short drive north of Ramnagar, on the road towards the park. It is at its busiest on Kartik Purnima and on festival days.
- **The Kosi river**, which runs down the park's eastern edge and past Ramnagar. The road towards the northern gates follows it, and the evening light on the water is reason enough for the drive.
- **Corbett Falls**, a small waterfall in the forest on the Kaladhungi road out of Ramnagar, with a short walk in from the road.
- **Nainital**, about 70 km from the farm: a day trip to the lake and back, or the way in by road if you come through Kathgodam.

Ramnagar itself is the last town before the park, with a market, fuel and cash machines, and the railway station that the overnight trains from Delhi arrive at. [How to get to the farm](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/getting-here) has the roads and the trains.

### Is there anything to do in the monsoon, when most of the park is shut?

Yes, and it is a different farm. From mid-June to mid-October most of the safari zones close, though Jhirna, Dhela and Sitabani stay open, so a monsoon stay still gets a safari. The flying and the telescopes stop until October. What the farm has instead is the green and the quiet: the orchard after rain, the birds at their loudest, the river high, and the house at its emptiest.

### How does a day fit together?

A day at the farm in the season runs something like this. Tea in the dark and the jeep at the door for the morning safari, back by nine or so for a late breakfast on the lawn. The pool or the mini golf until lunch. An ATV ride and high tea under the jamun tree in the afternoon, or the river, or nothing at all on a charpai under the trees. TARA at eight if the sky is clear, then dinner, then the bonfire. The second day swaps the safari for a flight, or for a long morning in the orchard.

The [two three-day packages](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/packages) put the days together in this shape. The [rooms and cottages](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/stay) are on the official booking site, and [the two cottages take dogs](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/pet-friendly), so the walk in the orchard can have one more on it.

Questions

### Short answers.

[All the questions](https://www.homesteadcorbett.com/faqs)

#### Is Jim Corbett worth visiting without a safari?

Yes, if you stay somewhere with a day in it. On the farm the days hold the river, the orchard, the runway, the pool, mini golf, the ATV track and the telescopes, and the forest is six kilometres away whether or not you go in.

#### What can children do in Jim Corbett?

On the farm: the play area with its swings and tree house, mini golf, the ATV track, the pool, table tennis, the animals, and the telescopes at TARA after dark. The safari takes children too; every guest on the permit needs a government ID.

#### Can you go stargazing in Jim Corbett?

Yes. TARA, the observatory on the farm, runs guided sessions of about an hour on clear nights from October to June. The sky over the foothills is dark enough for the Milky Way in the dark half of the month.

#### What is there to do in Corbett in the monsoon?

Jhirna, Dhela and Sitabani stay open for safaris through the monsoon. On the farm the flying and the stargazing stop until October, and the orchard, the river and the birds take over.

#### How far is Nainital from Jim Corbett?

About 70 km from the farm, a day trip to the lake and back.

Staying near the park?
