## Paramotoring near Jim Corbett, from a Farm's Own Runway

It exists because one man saw something by a lake in Hungary and could not stop thinking about it.

Sakhanpur Airfield

### A view Bunny wanted to share.

He went up in it and came down changed. Thirty-three years, a trip to Dijon and a great deal of paperwork later, he cut a runway into his own farm. Guests fly from it now, in the ultralight with a pilot or under a paramotor, and see the farm the way he wanted to: the house, the orchard rows, the forest line, the foothills behind.

What a flight is

### A few minutes up, and the farm reads as a map.

The airfield is a grass runway cut into the farm at Sakhanpur, with the red-roofed hangar beside it that you can see from the air on the home page. From it, a guest goes up one of two ways: under a paramotor, which is a wing with a motor, for five to seven minutes over the orchard, the house and the forest line; or in the ultralight trike, a seat behind the pilot, for a session over the farm and the foothills behind it.

Neither is a joyride for its own sake. The point, as Bunny saw it by that lake in Hungary, is the view: the house among the old trees, the mango and lychee rows laid out in lines, the runway itself, and the forest beginning at the fence. The farm reads as a map from up there, and the reserve is the green beyond its edge.

- **The paramotor**: Five to seven minutes in the air under a wing with a motor, over the orchard, the house and the forest line. Early morning or late afternoon, when the air is still.
- **The ultralight trike**: A seat behind the pilot in the red trike, for a session over the farm and the foothills. Price on request.

Who flies, and when

### The sky has the final word.

Flights run from October to June, early in the morning and late in the afternoon, when the air over the Terai is calm, and never in the monsoon. The pilot decides on the day: if the wind is up or the cloud is down, the flight waits, and a flight called off is not charged. Weight limits apply, so say who is flying when you ask, and The Homestead confirms who can go up.

Guests fly as passengers, with the pilot. A paramotor flight is short and low enough that the orchard goes by in rows; the trike climbs higher and stays up longer. Children and anyone unsure should ask first: the pilot's word on who flies is final, and the farm would rather say so before you arrive than at the runway.

- **The season**: October to June. Never in the monsoon.
- **The hour**: Early morning and late afternoon, when the air is calm.
- **The weather**: Weather permitting; the pilot's word is final. A flight called off is not charged.
- **Weight**: Weight limits apply. Say who is flying when you ask, and The Homestead confirms.
- **Notice**: More than a day's notice: flying is arranged ahead, with the pilot.

### A runway on a farm.

The runway is grass, mown into the fields between the orchards, with the hangar at one end for the trike and the ATVs. Mornings on it start before the guests are up: the pilot walks the strip, the wind sock is read, and the first flight goes out while the mist is still on the fields. In the afternoon the light comes in low over the foothills, and that is the other time to fly.

On the ground, the airfield is part of the farm like anything else. The orchard walk passes it, the ATV track loops near it, and guests who are not flying watch from the grass with tea. Few places to stay anywhere have a runway of their own; this one has it because a farmer wanted to see his farm from above.

How to book

### Ask before you come.

A flight is arranged ahead, with the pilot, so send your dates and say who would like to fly. The Home Ground package includes one paramotor flight each. The trike is otherwise priced on its own, on request, on top of your stay.

If the weather turns on the day, the flight moves to the next calm hour or is dropped without charge. The farm has plenty to fill the gap: the orchard walk, the pool, the ATV track, and TARA after dark.
